Liverpool 1 Hicks & Gillett 0

October 13th 2010 20:24
So today finally confirmed that Tom Hicks doesn’t always get his own way and this is a light hearted look at what has been a nightmare three years for Liverpool FC fans.

Where did it all go wrong? Well first of all he bought the club (along with Gillett). After Hicks’ experiences with Corinthians & Texas Rangers surely he shouldn’t have been allowed to come anywhere near the Mighty Reds, but I suppose we have David Moores and Rick Parry to thank for that.

"It is just the beginning of a new era. They are bringing to the table tremendous and relevant experience, a passion for sport, real resources and a strong commitment to Liverpool."

Ex Liverpool Chief Executive Rick Parry 2007

Parry you clown!
Honk Honk

All he was missing was a flower that squirted water, big shoes and a bucket of glitter.

Not only did this idiot (Hicks) think he’d make a fortune from this deal, he also had the cheek to think he could fool Liverpool supporters that he was even interested in the club and not just the dollars he could make.

"This is truly the largest sport in the world, the most important sport in the world, and this is the most important club in the most important sport in the world”.

At the time Beadle was still alive, I almost sure he was there filming an episode of Game for a Laugh.

Very handy

So, 3 years on, after wasting the clubs money and piling debt upon the club, they finally caved to fan power and announced they’re going to sell – but for £800 million!! They’d only bought the club for £218 million (approx), where had they got this from!

"I should make four times my money selling Liverpool FC".

Tom Hicks April 2010

For some reason both Hicks and Gillett thought they could not only clear the debts they’d acquired by also confidently predicted they’d make a very hefty profit to boot – oops!

A Bull Shiter (aka Tom Hicks)

Fan Power pushed forward, the Spirit of Shankly formed and Liverpool fans yet again proved why they are some of the best football supporters around and thoughts were passed on from every angle - match day songs, protests, internet campaigns etc. Eventually the owners lowering the asking price to £600 million, after realising the £800 million would never happen – but neither did the £600!!

In April 2010, Martin Broughton was installed as chairman, with a top priority to find a buyer. By October 2010 this was done, he and the board accepted a bid from NESV for £320 million, nearly half of what Dumb and Dumber expected. To stop this they needed a plan and quick…….the plan was simple (or stupid in everyone else’s eyes).

Hicks & Gillett had the audacity to attempt to sack managing director Christian Purslow along with the commercial director Ian Ayre in a last-ditch bid to keep control. They did this by trying to replace them with Mack Hicks (Hicks son), and Lori Kay McCutcheon, a vice president at Hicks Holdings. This would have meant they’d easily keep any vote on their side and make sure they were in control. What they forgot, was what was in Martin Broughton’s contract. He and only he, could decide who was on the board – not Hicks and Gillett. This meant that the attempt was useless and about as effective as Christian Poulsen.

A sale was agreed and with the RBS deadline looming, everyone would be happy except our American Idiots (quote Green Day). The owners challenged and it, and if it went to court – luckily for Liverpool fans, sense prevailed and late morning on the 13th October, Broughton and Liverpool won the right to sanction the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures (NESV). And most importantly Hicks & Gillett had failed.

This now means that it is likely that they will now lose £144 million approximately and that will bring a smile to every fans face. It also allows a possible sale to go forward and to get rid of the RBS debt, although other bids could still appear. So at this current moment, its not clear cut the club will be sold to NESV.

Whatever the case we just need to make sure the next owners of Liverpool FC have the clubs interest at heart, as we’ve had enough of people that don’t care!! Time for a drink Tom?
