The Big Summer Ahead!!!

September 2nd 2010 18:14
This is what Tom Hicks promised us at Liverpool; a big Summer – is this what we got? Some may defend the clubs signings this Summer (which is not the real issue); the issue I would like to address is what we have lost. This is not going to be a discussion about the decision to replace Rafa with Roy at a cost of a reported £12m – despite that has left frowns upon many a fans face (except the Rafa haters)

Anyway first thing to do is mention the ins and outs:

Out (sold or loaned):

Javier Mascherano (Barcelona)
Alberto Aquilani (Juventus)
Yossi Benayoun (Chelsea)
Albert Riera (Olympiakos)
Diego Cavalieri (Cesena)
Philipp Degen (Stuttgart)
Emiliano Insua (Galatasaray)
Mikel San Jose (Athletic)
Krisztian Nemeth (Olympiakos)
Damien Plessis (Panathinaikos)
David Martin (MK Dons)
Lauri Dalla Valle (Fulham)
Alexander Kacaniklic (Fulham)
Robbie Threlfall (Bradford)
Vincent Weijl (Eibar)

In:

Raul Meireles (Porto)
Joe Cole (Chelsea)
Christian Poulsen (Juventus)
Milan Jovanovic (Standard)
Paul Konchesky (Fulham)
Brad Jones (Middlesbrough)
Danny Wilson (Rangers)
Jonjo Shelvey (Charlton

I will not discuss each and every player but the highlights, low lights and rumours even touching on the strange report that Babel was in a helicopter on his way to London to sign for Spurs (Sky being hyperactiver again). Ok, down to business!

Two of our first signings were the legacy of Rafa; Jonjo Shelvey (who may look 50 but is still a teen) is a solid centre midfielder who loves being on the ball and doesn't mind a big challenge. He is one to watch and a future England player if his development continues at Liverpool (not in a Le Tallec or Cheyrou sort of development way). The second signing - make note ITV, BBC and SKY was Milan Jovanovic who was signed be Rafa Benitez not Roy. Milan is a natural forward who has recently been played left wing; maybe the answer to our striker issues. Milan ouzes talent but can ouze attitude if things aren't going his way, like many fans I am excited by the prospect of a happy Milan but nervous if he struggles to make an impact for him and team spirirt.

The next players we seen come in were Danny Wilson (Rafa's number 1 Summer target) and Joe Cole (Stevies and Carras number 1 signings). Danny, a young Scottish International defender who is a footballer not just a grafter like Jonjo he may have a big future at Liverpool if he's played the right way. Joe Cole, quality player when fit and seems to have been signed by our England players during the world cup to the disgust of Harry Redknapp who chirped on sky about the whole things 'We fough we'd signed that Joe Geezer' (thats how I remember it).

So far, so good 4 quality players in or rough diamonds depending on your outlook and now the bad stuff!!! (If you wanted no bad stuff then the LFC thread is not for you) - Youssi signed for Chelsea, little else to say about the whole situation - the club in a statement blamed Rafa for his sale despite passing him his P45 2 weeks earlier; no idea why Inter's new manager would sell our player to Chelsea. First thought chit-chang Tom and George. This was followed by the sale 2 quality youth players in Nemeth and San Jose and a moaner in Riera - all this money soon to be seen in an RBS account near you!!!! The Mascherano did one (see previous blog) and today came out and said it was not his family that made him leave but broken promise by the club - shock horror. Either way Broughton went and collected a 6ft comedy cheque from Spain and put that safely away in the re-financing moneybox Tom has going.

After all these negatives we were hit with a positive; the signing of Raul Meireles - the Barca and Chelsea target was unveiled as Masch left. Nearly made me forget we'd just sold the world's best defensive midfielder on the cheap he's a perfect replacement for Masch and wants everybody to know he is not Mascherano (in case you didn't know). At some point we managed to get Poulsen in as well (he just appeared). During all of this wheeling and dealing lets not forget Liverpool also sent the now fit Aqulilani off to Juve on loan (we only like him when he's injured), signed the highly rated Brazilian left back Fabio Aurelio (never seen him before) and touted Insua to everybody despite Roy saying he rated him highly - luckily enough we managed to loan him to Turkey on the close of the transfer window (don't want Roy to have too many options for this season).

Now the worse bit; yes that was not the worse bit - on the day of the transfer window we managed to get another left back in; 29 year old Englishman Paul Konchesky from Fulham but managed to gave them money and 2 of our best talented youth players in Lauri Dalla Valle and Alexander Kacaniklic in exchange; Roy should hang his head in shame for that deal - short sighted to say the least. Then Roy spent the rest of the day touting Babel and Lucas to West Ham in exchange for Carlton Cole - thats how you breed confidence in your players! Either way WHU told us to did one; sky sports confused by the whole situation assumed Babel was in a helicopter to London to sign for Spurs as Harry like to but everybody; this story was corrected by Babel and his famous twitter account. So all in all again Liverpool ended a 'big' Summer without the signing of a striker to cover Torres and a few good buys but the negatives are losing too many players especially youth may come back and bite us soon. The soccer world is constantly full of transfer rumors. What if? Takes a look at some of the world's greatest ever soccer players and how different their careers could have been if some of these transfers had been pulled off. Would Maradona have become the player he had if Sheffield Utd had signed him as a 17 year old. Would Ronaldinho have survived his time on loan at St Mirren? How successful would Arsenal have been with both Lionel Messi and Ronaldo in the ranks? The book covers successes, injuries and skinny dipping in Manchester's River Irwell. An informative and entertaining read. WHAT IF?
