Woy's Woe's Continue against the Black Cats

September 26th 2010 12:47
After Wednesday’s lacklustre effort against Northampton, Liverpool were given an opportunity to let fans forget with an on-paper easy 3 pointer at home against ‘Fat Heads’ Sunderland. Unfortunately, this was to be proven to be incorrect and another 2-2 draw was to follow.

So where to start? Woy decides to change the whole of the starting 11 – good move! This meant the likes of Torres, Gerrard, Carragher and Reina returned, the Benitez spine. But then he showed his lack of understanding both tactically and of the Liverpool way. Firstly, he plays Kuyt behind Torres and moves Joe Cole to the left and Raul Meireles to the right and he selects the over-rated and ineffective Poulsen along with our most bizarre signing since Paul Stewart or David Speedie – Paul Konchesky at left back.

So we start the game with at least 4 players not playing in their best position and looking like the long ball game will be used in favour of the Liverpool way of pass and move. Within a few minutes, Liverpool has the ball in the onion bag – but Torres is adjudged to have been offside after a great ball from Gerrard. A pity, it was marginal and a goal for the over-frustrated Torres could have been just what he needed to kick start his season.

The reds continue to push forward and had a good few minutes until a free kick was given away to Sunderland. Turner kicks the ball back, softly and only Torres reacts, looking up at the referee only he and Kuyt seem to be playing to the letter of the law and Kuyt slots past the keeper, who seems to be doing a Barthez impression with his hand in the air. 1-0! Or is it? The Sunderland players surround the referee and the linesman (sorry assistant referee). They’re claiming Turner was giving the ball to the keeper – Mignolet to take the kick. This was no doubt the truth, but to the letter of the law Turner kicked the ball back the kick was taken, the 1-0 score line stands as Steve Bruce who at this stage can only be explained as a ‘Red Faced Frank Sidebottom’ is furious. Surely this is just karma for the beach ball incident last season. What a short memory he has, even with such a fat head for storage.

Kuyt makes it 1-0
In your face Fat Head!

Suddenly Liverpool seem to take their foot off the pedal, surely a bad move as this is looking like it could be 5 or 6. Woy seems to be happy with 1-0 and maybe his idea is to settle for this and the 3 points. Wrong move Woy, as Poulsen (who shouldn’t be in the starting XI) decides it would be a great idea to add his one and only one contribution to the game, as he decides to throw his hand in the air and give Sunderland a penalty. Bent calmly steps up and just manages to put it under Pepe Reina and into the back of the net 1-1, and throughout Anfield it can be felt by everyone that all the hope of the early promise is removed.

Half time arrives and to be honest the 1-1 score is fair. So what will Woy say at half time, surely using all his experience he has noticed his tactics aren’t working. Perhaps, he’ll stick Dirk on the right? Put Joe Cole just behind Torres? What does he do? Nothing, or if he did change anything, the players are not listening to him, which wouldn’t be surprising as his ass seems to be stuck by super glue throughout the game to the bench. Does he know a technical area exists for such things as tactical changes? Or perhaps due to the size of Steve Bruce’s head this wasn’t possible today?
The second half kicks off and no changes, are the Reds playing for a draw? Obviously not as Onuoha skips to the bye line and whips in a cross for Darren Bent – 2-1! WTF is going on?? Are the players tired from Wednesday? No, none of them played. So what’s the excuse? There isn’t one, it’s just not happening and the fact Woy has about 4 players not playing in their strongest position could be the answer? Yes, Rafa did this in the past, but this was due to lack of squad depth – Woy doesn’t have a large squad either, but on this day he can easily play everyone in their strongest position. Perhaps he’s like this at home, he owns a lawnmower, but likes to use shears, or maybe he changes the channel by the TV not the remote? Why? Perhaps it’s because he’s not used to the quality he has and hasn’t realised we are not Fulham or Blackburn?Hmm, continuing on Torres is becoming more annoyed he actually listened to Woy and stayed at the club decides to take out Titus ‘Out on bail’ Bramble. A Yellow card, but deserved – but at least he’s showing some passion!!

Nearly 20 minutes past by and the Black Cats are playing well and looking like they might snatch a win. Woy has finally decided that the ineffective Poulsen should be replaced by Super Davey Ngog, at last a positive move, maybe now he might even let Stevie Gerrard tread over the halfway line? Quite why Woy decides to restrain him, I don’t understand.

Minutes later it’s a goal!! Torres breaks down the right and Gerrard meets his cross with his head and its 2-2. The question is, did Stevie just forget his defensive instruction, or did Woy finally let him play his own game – we will never know. Suddenly the 3 points look a possibility again and surely the Mighty Reds will push on and gain a totally undeserved 3-2 win!!?

Sandwiched inside some increased Liverpool pressure, Carragher and Skrtel clash heads. The biggest shock is that Skrtel actually bleeds human blood and not battery acid like the T100 is really is. The game continues after this event with Liverpool only having 9 players on the pitch with even Carragher being stopped from coming back on without a shirt (I think he thought he was playing for the skins team?). The way this was handled kind of summed up the game the referee had, but a least he let us keep our first goal!

After a few good chances and a decent bit of pressure Daniel Agger misses what could be classed as a sitter, the last chance of the game is gone and a 2-2 draw is a fair result, but the performance hasn’t been good enough. We were also lucky Reina’s challenge on Welbeck (cheating Manc Scum) didn’t end up with another penalty award and that Gerrard’s forearm to Welbeck (he deserved it the Manc Scum), was only deemed to be a yellow card offence. Blackpool is up next and if another effort like this follows the fans could be campaigning against Woy as well as Hicks and Gillett!

Sort it out Woy, you have the tools, learn how to use them and lets see some wins on the board. 15th in the Premiership just isn’t good enough!

Certainly a lively first post Paul; I have tried not to mention 'manc scum' or Steve Bruce's deathstar head but you have truely left that line crossed

Anyway, did you forget about the post-match protest we went to - approx 9000 stayed behind
